Explore the role of a Director
Learn about the role of a director and how they influence screen storytelling. In this Intro to Directing course, you’ll explore all facets of directing and a director’s responsibilities from pre-production through to post-production, including coverage, visual storytelling, acting and on-set procedures.
Taught by Australia’s premier directors, become familiar with this key filmmaking role, story essentials they need to know, building relationships with actors and production departments, and what makes a great director.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
Describe the Director’s role in translating stories to the screen through pre-production, production and post-production
Outline how the Director leads a creative team through collaboration with various heads of department
Identify approaches of collaborating with actors, from preparation to screen

This is an introductory course that covers directing basics and tips for beginners through interactive lectures, tutorials, readings, viewings and writing exercises. No previous experience or knowledge is required.
This course is ideal for aspiring directors, filmmakers, content creators, screen practitioners and other creatives wanting to delve into the role of a director, improve their skills and explore directing as a career path.
AFTRS Intro courses are open to students aged 16 years and older. Students under 18 must complete an Under 18 Consent Form.
Course Requirements and Delivery
Intro to Directing is offered online and in person.
For the online course, classes are delivered over Zoom with 2 x Zoom sessions per week across 3 weeks. The course also involves 1 hour of self-directed learning per week. You will need access to a desktop or laptop computer with camera, sound and good internet connection, and a quiet place to participate.
The in-person course takes place over 2 days, 9:30am – 3:00pm, and involves 3 hours of self-directed learning.
Once enrolled, you will receive further instructions.
