Work in a Writers Room
Writers’ rooms have become an increasingly essential component of contemporary series and long-form screen production. In this five-day intensive course, you will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to collaborate effectively in a writers’ room.
This course is specifically designed to provide writers with insight into the functioning of these rooms, fostering an understanding of the key skills required for productive collaboration. Through hands-on learning, participants will engage in activities covering ideation, storylining/plotting, note-taking, drafting, and feedback.
Gain insights from guest speakers Sara Khan (Heartbreak High, Erotic Stories, Paper Dolls) and Marian McGowan (The Great, Lilian’s Story, Two Hands) as they share their experience and knowledge on the upcoming course.
Manage working in a writers’ room; adopting methods suitable for a range of formats and genres
Apply skills in problem-solving and team management to realise a shared vision

This course requires an understanding of screenwriting and storytelling fundamentals and a background or some experience in the screen industry, particularly producing or screen business, is also advantageous.

This course is for students aged 18+ only.
If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.
AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.
Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS’ sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.
AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.
