Locations Department Intensive (Melbourne)

Behind the scenes of 'Mud Crab' | Master of Arts Screen, 2021

Presented in collaboration with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the Australian Location Managers Guild, Locations Department Intensive is a comprehensive five-day course exploring the dynamic world of film and TV location management. This course has been developed with the input of industry experts and is taught by experienced members of the Australian Location Managers Guild, ensuring participants receive the highest standard of professional training.

This intensive program covers all aspects of the locations department, from scouting and securing locations to ensuring on-set safety and managing logistics. Whether you’re aspiring to become a Locations Scout, Location Manager or seeking to sharpen your skills in a key production role, this course will provide essential, hands-on experience and knowledge.  

This course also provides participants with a 6-month student membership to the Australian Location Managers Guild where you will receive their newsletter and be able to access resources and network.

 

What the Course Covers:

  • Locations Department Fundamentals: Understand the full process, from reading a script to wrapping a location, including the responsibilities of scouts, coordinators, and on-set managers. 
  • Collaboration and Creative Problem-Solving: Work closely with Producers, Directors, and Designers to interpret creative briefs, balance budgets, and meet the practical needs of the production. 
  • Scouting and Advanced Tools: Learn to scout effectively and understand how to assess risks while scouting, as well as understand how advanced tools such as drones and 360-degree cameras are used in industry. 
  • Legal Frameworks and Logistics: Gain in-depth knowledge of permits, contracts, insurance, and logistical planning. 
  • Risk and Safety Management: Explore strategies for conducting thorough risk assessments, ensuring safety on set, and managing real-world location risks. 
  • Well-being and Work-Life Balance: Delve into the realities of working in the Location Department, including long hours and stress, while learning strategies to maintain mental health and well-being.

Course Requirements and Delivery

Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop (with software such as Excel) and a smartphone with camera. All other materials will be provided. Please inform us in advance at shortcourses@aftrs.edu.au if you need any equipment assistance.

This course is for students aged 18+ only.

If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.

AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.

Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.

AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.
