Master the skills of directing

Elevate your craft as a director in storytelling, script analysis and working with actors. Learn from leading industry professionals as you build on your directing skills and experience, with the opportunity to practice these skills in hands-on workshops and exercises with professional actors.

In this five-day directing short course, you will develop skills in casting, rehearsal techniques, breaking down a script and scene blocking that can be applied to directing all forms of screen content.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

Analyse the role of the director from pre- to post-production for scripted screen projects.

Demonstrate practical and creative skills in scene blocking, leading rehearsals and auditions.

Apply your directorial voice to communicate effectively with actors and heads of department.

“I learnt so much, having such a knowledgeable teacher was amazing, and working with professional actors was also an incredible experience.”

Is the Directing Intensive right for you?

This is an advanced film directing course and filmmaking experience is required. Ideally you would have directed a short film, web series, TVC or similar and are looking to expand your skills in the areas of working with actors and script analysis. Students will have the opportunity to work with professional actors and fellow student actors in practical in-class rehearsal and auditioning exercises. This course does not utilise any camera or sound equipment or offer any take-home recordings of exercises.

It is expected that students entering this course can understand director’s role in translating stories to the screen; outline how the director leads a creative team through collaboration with various heads of department; and identify approaches of collaborating with actors, from preparation to screen as covered in our Intro to Directing course.

This course is ideal for emerging directors and filmmakers seeking to improve their directing skills. It is also ideal for actors, screenwriters and other experienced filmmakers transitioning into directing.
