AFTRS students are exploring dating through the decades in their new podcast, ‘A Date in Time’

Let’s face it, finding love in 2024 can be tricky. That’s why Radio & Podcasting students from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) are launching the podcast A Date in Time: A time traveller’s guide to hooking up. Each episode will focus on a different decade, starting in the 70s. All six episodes will be dropped on the sixth of November.

Come along and follow Lexi’s (voiced by Grace Cooper) journey through time, as she explores the quirks of dating and finding love across the decades.

In each episode, two guests are interviewed about their lived experience of navigating a love life in a specific decade alongside her AI companion, CLAIRE. Lexi then travels back in time, and we hear how her ‘Date in Time’ plays out. She discovers that while how we date has evolved, the fundamental human desire for connection remains timeless.

AFTRS student and Producer of ‘A Date In Time’ Maggie Videan said, “what a cool concept to turn back the clock and check out how dating, love, lust and relationships have morphed over the years. We travel back 50 years in a unique collaboration of the Post-Grad Radio & Podcasting crew, complete from Boomers to Zoomers! It is unlike anything we have done in the course so far. Save the date for the big reveal and hang on to your Nokias!”

With only five weeks to produce the podcast, involving on-campus and online students, the team have roles including hosting, producing, social media and promotions, editing and composing.

AFTRS Radio and Podcasting Course Convener Natalie Pozdeev said, “the NEXT podcast is a challenging-yet-thrilling learning experience, as AFTRS students take full ownership of the series, from concept to publication. This hands-on project ensures AFTRS Radio & Podcast graduates are workplace-ready from day one.”

With industry mentors, Dani Toressan (Backyard Magic), Elissa Ratliff (previously Mamamia) and Madeline Joannou (Mylk Media) will be guiding students with one on one sessions in areas of their expertise.

Madeline Joannou said, “the creativity of the AFTRS Radio and Podcasting students is truly endless. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives bring a unique energy to storytelling. I’m excited for audiences to experience the innovative narratives they’ve crafted, showcasing the remarkable talent emerging in our industry”.

In the past two years, AFTRS students’ podcasts have both won awards, I’m at A Crossroad – 2023 (Best Factual Podcast for Radio Today) and Craze – 2022 (People’s Choice in the Indie Category for Radio Today’s Podcast of the year).

This year’s team have big shoes to fill! The series will be available on all major podcast platforms – Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeartRadio. To keep up to date, follow @ADateinTime on Instagram.
