In partnership with RMIT University’s School of Media and Communication, the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) will deliver new short courses in Melbourne to directly address the screen skills shortages identified in Victoria.

AFTRS and RMIT have consulted with VicScreen in determining some of the screen industry’s most immediate needs and will offer 4 short courses in person, starting from early December with a five-day Production Accounting Intensive, followed by Intro to Producing & Screen Business (2 days), Assistant Directing Fundamentals (2 days) and Locations Department Intensive (5 days).

The Australian screen industry is expanding with increasing numbers of both local and international productions taking place around the country. AFTRS works closely with the screen industry to meet current skills needs at a national level.

One of the industry’s critical needs is for more production accountants and assistants.

In the Production Accountant Intensive, participants learn the knowledge and skills to prepare them for a career in the screen industry. They learn how to apply accounting technologies and workflows while developing a strong understanding of the stages of productions and their financial reporting obligations and requirements. They gain specialised skills to work as an assistant production accountant with the aim to fast track to a career in production accounting, or be immediately able to works as a production accountant on a low budget production.

RMIT works closely with the screen industry and is a leader in accounting courses. This new intensive, in partnership with AFTRS, is perfect for accountants – including RMIT graduates – who might consider bringing their transferrable skills into the vibrant and booming screen sector.

Professor Lisa French, RMIT Dean of Media and Communication said that “RMIT is deeply committed to working with and enhancing the industry by providing education and training that not only responds to the broader needs of a rapidly evolving landscape, but also addresses critical skills gaps. We are enormously excited to be partnering with AFTRS to deliver short courses with critical real-world applications. Through this partnership we will support the screen industry in Victoria and Australia by developing the expertise to drive innovation, as well as to have the talent to support sector growth”.

Nell Greenwood, AFTRS CEO said: “We’re delighted to be working with RMIT to deliver much-needed training to build and strengthen the Victorian talent pipeline.   Addressing critical industry skills gaps needs government, industry and education providers to bring their respective areas of expertise to work together on this – and this very exciting partnership does just that: combining RMIT’s world-class facilities and AFTRS industry expertise with a shared commitment to excellence and the support of Australia’s creative talent.”
