12 Ellie Award Nominations For AFTRS Students and Alumni

Still from ‘My First Panic’ | Dir. Michaela Holmes

AFTRS students and alumni have received 12 nominations across eight categories at the Australian Screen Editors Guild’s 2020 Ellie Awards. Celebrating the best of local talent in post-production, the annual awards recognise excellence in the editing of feature, short and documentary films, television, music videos, commercials, and online and multimedia content.

2018 Master of Arts Screen graduate, Jesse Hildebrand has earned a nomination for Best Editing in a Short Drama for her work on 2018 Master of Arts Screen capstone project My First Panic, directed by Michaela Holmes. The work premiered at Flickerfest earlier this year, screened at Festival Mental in Lisbon and is now streaming on ABC iview.

In the feature drama category, two of the four nominees are alumni: Andy Canny (Master of Arts (Film & Television) Editing, 2000) for his work editing Leigh Whannell’s thriller The Invisible Man, which stars Elisabeth Moss, and Scott Walmsley (Master of Arts: Film & Television, 2008), editor of Unsound, directed by fellow alumnus Ian Watson (Graduate Certificate Screen: Creative Producing, 2018). In the category, they are competing against editors for True History of the Kelly Gang and Hearts & Bones.

Scott Walmsley makes another appearance in the list, vying for Best Editing in Documentary Feature for his work on Machine, competing against fellow alumni Rolando Olalia (Graduate Diploma in Editing, 2014) and Sam Zubrycki (Graduate Diploma in Editing, 2014) for Miguelito Canto a Borinquen, and Lindi Harrison ASE (Specialist Extension Certificate Editing, 1993) for The Leadership, which made its debut at this year’s Sydney Film Festival.

Representing AFTRS in the Best Editing in Drama category is alumnus Adrian Rostirolla (Master of Arts (Film & Television) Editing, 2003), who is being recognised for his work on Episode Three of The Secrets She Keeps. The series was directed by fellow alumnae Jennifer Leacey (Graduate Diploma: Directing (Fiction & Non-Fiction, 2010) and Catherine Millar (Diploma Directing, 1979).

Best Editing in Factual Entertainment nominees include alumnae Katie Flaxman (Master of Arts: Film, Television and Digital Media Editing, 2005) for Filthy Rich and Homeless, and Ash Watson (Graduate Diploma: Sound, 2010) for Struggle Street, while Leah Donovan’s (Master of Arts: Film, Television and Digital Media Documentary Editing, 2005) work is recognised in the Current Affairs category for Foreign Correspondent – Stolen Children.

Stewart Arnott (Graduate Diploma in Editing, 2013) is a contender for Best Editing in a Commercial for Levis’ ‘Use Your Voice’ campaign, while Brad Hurt (Master of Arts: Film and Television, 2008) is nominated in the Corporate and Branded category for Four Seasons’ ‘Bahrain Bay Events Like No Other’.
