Alumni nominated for 8th AACTA awards

'Nursery Rhymes' | Dir. Tom Noakes

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) has announced nominees for the Best Short Fiction Film and Best Short Animation categories at this year’s 8th AACTA Awards, half of which feature AFTRS alumni in major creative roles.

Nominated for Best Short Animation is Lost & Found, written and co-directed by Bradley Slabe (Master of Screen Arts 2014), and produced by Lucy Hayes. This nomination comes after Slabe won Sydney Film Festival’s 2018 Yoram Gross Animation Award for the film.

Nominated for Best Short Fiction Film is Nursery Rhymes, directed by Tom Noakes (Graduate Diploma: Directing, 2009), who earlier this year was awarded the Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director at Sydney Film Festival. Its creative team includes screenwriter Will Goodfellow (Master of Screen Arts, 2014) and co-producer Lucy Gaffy (Master of Screen Arts, 2012).

Additionally nominated for Best Short Fiction is Renée Marie Petropoulos’s Tangles and Knots, shot by cinematographer Zöe White ACS (Master of Arts: Film and Television Cinematography, 2008), and Charles Williams’ Palm d’Or winning, All These Creatures, shot by cinematographer: Adric Watson (Graduate Diploma in Cinematography, 2013).

All nominated short films will screen at the new AACTA Shorts Fest, once part of the former Festival of Australian Film, taking place in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth from Monday 20 August. View the full list of nominees.

Announcement of nominees in other categories will follow in the lead up to the awards ceremony, held on Wednesday 5 December 2018.
