Graduate Diploma in Radio and Podcasting

On studio during the 2NRS yearly broadcast exercise.

The Graduate Diploma in Radio and Podcasting is a post-graduate program emphasising practical craft development, balanced with theoretical frameworks that equip students to think critically, evaluate complex problems and reach radio and podcast audiences. The program is designed to equip students with tools to excel in collaboration, content development processes, research analysis, multiplatform delivery and creative leadership to shape the future of the Australian radio and podcast industry.

Equipped with knowledge and advanced craft practices in announcing, audio production, program producing, writing, news, voiceover, music directing, online and digital content, podcasting and marketing integration, the radio and podcasting graduates join roles in radio, podcasting and multiplatform broadcasting across Australia. Many have gone on to win radio awards nationally and internationally and are in leadership roles in the industry, both on-air and behind the scenes, including Pariya Taherzadah’s Escape from Iran (Gold and Silver winner at the New York Festival World Radio Awards), and Miles Martignoni, whose podcasts include The Reckoning (Gold and Grand Awards winner at the New York Festival World Radio Awards), Breathless, and Witch Hunt

The Graduate Diploma in Radio and Podcasting program produces job-ready graduates, like 2024 graduate and now ABC producer, Sunshine Wood who said, “I’m taking what I’m learning straight onto the job. I’m so lucky.”

And 2023 graduate and senior podcast producer at Mamamia, Grace Rouvray added, “I actually work with some people that I studied with at AFTRS — one of the new audio production people at Mamamia … and two people who work at KIIS,” noting how finding creative collaborators was a fundamental step for a successful and sustainable career.

Discover how the flexible study options at AFTRS were essential for Grace, how she discovered that her skillset was pointing her towards a broadcast career, and how the course provided a network of friends with whom she continues to collaborate.

AFTRS essentially got me this job. It connected me with the people who were important in order to make this happen. I mean, I’m still at AFTRS and I’m already employed full time. That’s a testament to AFTRS.

Gareth Thomson (Broadcast Journalist at ARN)

The AFTRS lecturers have been really supportive the whole way through. Giving us direction and guidance, but also technical skills. We get feedback from people who are producing shows right now. It’s been really good having those insights into what our working life might look like when we finish.

Dr Angela Tjeuw (General Practitioner, Podcast Producer, Radio Host at The Water Well Project)

During my final year at AFTRS, I had the privilege of being mentored by Phil Ashley-Brown, ABC Regional and Local Content Quality Manager.

Sandya Veduri (Executive Producer at SBS)

The part-time online course suits my location and work schedule. It’s about flexing a creative muscle that’s always been there. I’ve always loved radio.

Myoung Jae Yi (Content Creator at ABC)

I’ve gained a priceless amount of experience over these past few years from studying at AFTRS, sitting in with numerous 2GB hosts and then moving to Coffs Harbour to work with SCA.

Jake Harvey (Brand and Promotions Manager at Southern Cross Austereo)

For me, particularly doing it at this slower pace, I get to keep the connection with AFTRS for longer. Just to be in a community, where they find you opportunities or you can get your questions answered, as an isolated freelancer, that’s really valuable. As are the industry connections that come with the course.

Kate Lawrence (Researcher and Producer at ABC)

It was really amazing. A lot of what challenged me in the course was the live broadcasts. I think I learnt a lot about myself and how I operate as a producer in that space.

Monica Reid (Junior Producer, Jonesy and Amanda at ARN)

Everyone at AFTRS is so welcoming. You get to meet so many new people. Last week we got to meet Brooklyn Ross from K & J’s show.

Keeley Davies (Brand Experience Assistant at Southern Cross Austereo)

I’m taking what I’m learning straight onto the job. I’m so lucky.

Sunshine Wood (Radio Producer at ABC)

I had one plan, and it was to be on the Kyle and Jackie O show. My dad said, ‘You’ve got six months to get a full job.’ I said, ‘I’ll give you three and I’m on the show.’ I shook his hand and in three months I was on the show. To do it by 21 is amazing.

Alfie Laguzza (Content Assistant, The Kyle & Jackie O Show at ARN)

In my second year of journalism, I enrolled in a radio subject and that’s when the puzzle pieces fell into place for me. I applied to study radio at AFTRS, and the rest is history!

Haylee Potts (Executive Producer at Mix 106.3 Breakfast)
