There is something special about a built-to-purpose studio and the magic of a film set. The studio is transformed with gear, grips, props, walls, and light, buzzing with crew, actors, and extras, holding the silence for the sound, camera, and action. Rolling! All of it later disappears on the screen, allowing the performance, edit, sound design, and score to transport us into a different world.
For our latest Open Day campaign, we teamed up with photographer Daniel Boud and AFTRS students to shoot at our studios, focusing on creating together. From hiring the camera kit used by our Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production students, working with our production team to wheel in set pieces from props and staging, and even ducking up to the costume wardrobe for some backup looks.
The result is a vibrant invitation to step behind the scenes of AFTRS at Open Day, so here’s some of what you’ll discover when you come and visit:
The School includes five industry-standard studios, three smaller and two large studios, fitted with cutting-edge technology, studio lights and a centrally controlled lighting board. These studios are supported by an expert production team, ensuring students receive unparalleled support for class work and learning exercises.
Students can access a tech store with equipment for assignments, skills development, and production. To book equipment, students follow the guidelines for their program of study, as access to resources varies depending on the course.
The dedicated space for set and prop building and storage, known as ‘the workshop,’ is where students bring their visions to life, constructing the physical elements to dress the set. Our team of skilled prop and staging experts is always on hand to offer support and guidance to our students, helping them add layers of authenticity to their sets and bring the characters’ worlds to life.
While the workshop empowers students to create new set pieces and props, our extensive prop and costume store provides all the imaginable items accumulated through the years for different productions. Everything is shaped meticulously during pre-production, from breaking down scripts into individual scenes to creating shooting schedules, scouting locations, determining equipment needs, setting budgets, and building sets.
In post-production, everything comes together. Editing, colour correction, music and sound build the film, affect the atmosphere, and increase the emotional impact of each scene. AFTRS editing suites and video post facilities have technology experts to support films to be as powerful and moving as possible. There are three recording studios, one for music and one for foley, which record original compositions and sound effects for films. The mixing theatre is fully equipped for Dolby 5.1 and Atmos mixing.
AFTRS is home to The Jerzy Toeplitz Library, Australia’s premier audio and screen library, where students can explore a vast collection of films, TV series, filmmaking books, screenplays, and cinema literature.
Don’t miss the opportunity to explore AFTRS, Open Day is not just about showcasing our facilities and equipment; it’s about providing a firsthand experience of the vibrant community and world-class support you’ll receive. Engage with students, alumni, and dedicated staff and learn how AFTRS will guide and support your creative journey.
