In the ever-evolving landscape of the screen industry, versatility and a diverse skill set are becoming increasingly crucial. The role of a Shooter Producer is a prime example of this demand for multi-skilled professionals who can adapt to various production scenarios. These individuals are the linchpins in the creation of captivating stories for the screen in an unscripted environment, such as a documentary or reality series.
To delve into the intriguing and exciting role of a Shooter Producer, we sat down with accomplished Shooter Producer Rob Gunn, tutor of our upcoming TV Shooter Producer Intensive. In this Q&A, Rob shares insights into his favourite projects, the diverse challenges and rewards of the role, and the impact of his expertise on budding TV producers. So, if you’re passionate about storytelling and making a meaningful impact through your lens, read on as we uncover the behind-the-scenes magic of being a Shooter Producer.
What have been some of your favourite projects to work on as a Shooter Producer? What do you enjoy most about the role?
“I’ve had the privilege of working on diverse range of projects, from one-off documentaries with a small crew to large-scale multicamera productions with over 100 team members. My passion lies in projects that blend intimate storytelling, captivating contributors, and stunning cinematography.
A couple of standout projects include:
- The Embassy: This ob-doc for Channel Nine was shot in 2016. We followed the stories that came through the doors of the Australian consulate in Indonesia and Vietnam, we never knew how each day would unfold and had the opportunity to explore and film in some beautiful areas.
- Lost for Words: This factual series for SBS followed Australians overcoming literacy challenges. Our success hinged on building strong relationships and trust with the contributors, allowing them to fully embrace the project and share their experiences.
I love the variety of the role. One week, I might be filming a multimillion-dollar organisation’s CEO, and the next, I could be capturing the experiences of people facing homelessness. The job is both challenging and rewarding, demanding constant decision-making and problem-solving, all while giving voice to often overlooked stories that can drive meaningful societal change.”
Who is the TV Shooter Producer Intensive for? What previous experience translates well for someone looking to upskill into a Shooter Producer role?
“As you can see from the diverse range of projects I’ve worked on, what we’re really look for is a passion for shooting and a basic understanding of the industry. Whether you are taking the first steps in your career or an experienced producer looking to upskill, there is a lot to be gained from this hands-on course.“
What are your favourite stories from participants about how they’ve applied their Shooter Producer skills after completing the course?
“I often run into former students who are now working in the industry, and it’s always great to catch up and hear how they are applying the skills they developed during the course. Just a few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to shoot alongside a past student who is working as a freelance journalist and video producer. Earlier this year, I met with another student who had recently completed work on the challenging Network Ten show Hunted. It was truly rewarding to hear how the confidence they gained from our course had a positive impact on their careers.”
