Master of Arts Screen graduate and underwater cinematographer Jemma Craig shares how the recognition of an AFTRS scholarship made her feel seen and heard in pursuing her creative journey.
Jemma found that her camera was the best way to share her connection to the wondrous wildlife of the Great Barrier Reef as she grew up on Green Island. No matter where she was, Jemma communicated the incredible things she saw in the ocean through her camera, a path that led her to underwater cinematography.
At first, seeking a career connected to her love of camera and nature seemed intimidating, but an AFTRS scholarship enabled her to pursue her passion for filmmaking. Jemma recognises the transformative impact studying at AFTRS had on her creative expression, empowering her to continue creating films that showcase and inspire care for the world around us.
“I’ve always felt the responsibility to care about the ocean and the environment because it’s given me everything I have, and that’s why I want to give back. Now it’s possible.”
Education is an incredible investment in your future and AFTRS is committed to ensuring that our courses are available to all Australians. To support this, we offer a range of scholarships that recognise excellence and assist with the costs associated with higher education. If you are considering studying one of our award courses, make sure you check your eligibility for our scholarships and apply for what is available to you. Learn more about our scholarships here and speak to a Student Centre team member if you have any questions.
Jemma’s scholarship enabled her to pursue her filmmaking career with the Master of Arts Screen: Documentary. This comprehensive two-year program provided her with directing, storytelling and leadership skills through hands-on specialist workshops, masterclasses and industry mentoring.
