INTRODUCTION TO CONCEPTS & SKILLS
The AFTRS Foundation Diploma is Australia's only course created specifically for those just starting out on their screen arts industry careers.
Do you have an interest in working in the film industry, or new media or in television broadcasting but don't really know how it all works or where you fit in?
If you are an emerging filmmaker with a strong creative portfolio,
this unique and intensely practical course - structured around a
series of nine different workshops and led by experienced industry
practitioners - will provide you with opportunities to explore your
individual strengths and interests.
Working in small collaborative groups you will learn about the specialisations that make up all production activities, across all platforms, in the screen arts and broadcast sector in a practical 'hands-on' way.
THE WORKSHOPS:
CHARACTER, PERFORMANCE AND SCRIPT
In this workshop you will focus on classic acting techniques and
how to develop dramatic characters with actors.
CREATING EXPERIENCES
Discover how to tell stories across platforms using the internet,
games technologies and interactive media.
OBSERVATION AND RESEARCH
In this documentary workshop you will discover not only how to
observe and research real life stories but you will also get to
shoot and edit them as well.
STORY AND AUDIENCE
Learn how stories work and how you can use this knowledge to
engage audiences. You will shoot and edit your own exercises and
put into practice the narrative techniques you have learnt.
DESIGNING WORLDS
Production design is more than just designing sets for movies and
in this workshop you will explore the principles of design and how
to create authentic story worlds for all screen forms, from cinema
to games.
EMOTIONAL NOISE
Audiences are often unconscious of the powerful effect of sound.
In this workshop you will learn about the underlying relationship
between sound-design, music and emotion for film, television and
radio.
IMAGE
Cinematography is the visual language of the screen and this
workshop teaches you the art of creating storytelling images with a
camera. You will have the opportunity to shoot exercises that
convey story and emotion through moving images.
JUXTAPOSITION AND RHYTHM
Editing is the art of putting together images and sound to create
a total story experience. You will learn how to match images and
sounds to create meaning.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Learn how to practically manage film and TV production as you
examine professional production methods and organisational
techniques.
