The Documentary department at AFTRS currently offers the following postgraduate level courses specifically for documentarymakers:
GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN DOCUMENTARY FUNDAMENTALS
ARE YOU AN EMERGING DOCUMENTARY MAKER LOOKING TO IMPROVE YOUR
SKILLS AND UNDERSTAND HOW TO CONNECT WITH INDUSTRY?
You will learn about multi-platform storytelling, research and
development, story analysis, scripting on the run, budgeting,
pitching, archive use, intellectual property, interviewing, the
current Australian documentary landscape and creative
collaborations. It is ideal for filmmakers with ideas in
development who want to know how to move them forward. By the end
of this course you will have acquired a practical toolkit for
directing as well as development and an understanding of the
industry.
This course overlaps with three other Graduate Certificates
(Screenwriting, Producing and Directing) giving you the chance to
develop ongoing collaborative relationships.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN DOCUMENTARY
EXTEND YOUR SKILLS AND IMPACT AS A DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER.
This course focuses on the future of non-fiction storytelling and
engages with the latest innovations in documentary storytelling,
opening with practical masterclasses from an acclaimed
international director. During the course, you will work on
solo
and large crew shoots and across a variety of formats and styles
with a range of subjects and professional actors. There are four
short-filmed exercises: a cinema style doco, a hybrid exercise
utilising a mixture of fiction and non-fiction techniques, an
observational exercise and a re-enactment. The syllabus also
includes modules in advanced research techniques and skills,
interview and performance and culminates in an intensive workshop
focused on the development of a slate of projects ready to take
into market.

MASTER OF SCREEN ARTS*
DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A REAL IMPACT AND CREATE EXCELLENT WORK THAT
CUTS THROUGH?
You will initiate and realise a major project that is only limited
by your imagination and the resources AFTRS is able to provide.
Hone your specialist skills through a tailored, in-depth and
intensely practically focused course that will help you achieve
mastery in your chosen area of specialisation, and also investigate
Australian screen history and big philosophical and sociological
ideas in action for context and meaning,. You will be supported to
map out your own path in what is an increasingly competitive
marketplace as you collaborate with others to achieve genuinely
innovative work.
* Only open to AFTRS Graduates who completed a Graduate Diploma
between 2009 and 2011. Applicants will need to have demonstrated a
high degree of originality and assured craft skills to gain entry
into the course.
