AFTRS is governed by a council which comprises:

  • Three members appointed by the Governor-General
  • Three members elected by Convocation
  • One AFTRS member of staff elected by staff
  • One AFTRS student elected by students
  • The Chief Executive Officer.

The principle functions of the Council are to:

  • Develop and review policy relating to training programs and other AFTRS activities
  • Monitor the effectiveness of AFTRS' overall performance
  • Monitor financial matters including annual budget estimates
  • Oversee matters concerning the internal structure of AFTRS and senior staff appointments
  • Provide and maintain strong communication links with the film and broadcasting industries
  • Review AFTRS' strategic objectives
  • Ensure that systems are in place to monitor and control:
    1. compliance with the law and ethical standards
    2. financial performance
    3. accountability to the Federal government.

Peter Ivany - Chair


Peter Ivany is currently Executive Chairman of his own diversified investment company, Ivany Investment Group. Peter has had long involvement in the film industry. As Chief Executive of Hoyts Cinemas (1988-1999), Peter grew the company from a small cinema chain of 40 theatres in Australia to a global business with over 2,000 theatres operating in 12 countries. Peter is an active member of the arts and charities. Among the many positions he holds, including Chair of AFTRS, Peter is Appeal Chairman of the Jewish Communal Appeal, Chairman of the Sydney Australian Football Foundation and Board Member of the Jewish Film Festival, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the President's Council of the Art Gallery of NSW.

Fiona Cameron                       

In late 1996, Fiona Cameron became Senior Adviser to the Minister for Communications and the Arts. In 1998 she headed up Corporate Affairs for the Australian Radio Network before taking on the role of General Manager at Sydney FM radio station, MIX 106.5. In 2001, Fiona moved to Melbourne to establish the new FM radio station, Nova 100. Nova 100 launched in December 2001 with unprecedented success and Fiona continues in the role of founding General Manager. Fiona is currently a Director of Commercial Radio.

David Elfick

An independent filmmaker for the past 30 years, David Elfick played an instrumental part in the establishment of the new wave of Australian films internationally. First with his ground breaking surfing movie Crystal Voyager and followed by the internationally acclaimed Newsfront. David has produced and directed feature films and high quality television drama such as Rabbit-Proof Fence which he produced alongside AFTRS graduate Phillip Noyce as director.

Posie Graeme-Evans

 
Posie Graeme-Evans

A television producer, writer and director for over 25 years, Posie Graeme-Evans has created hundreds of hours of award-winning drama and entertainment - including Sons and Daughters, Rafferty's Rules, Logie Award winning McLeod's Daughters and the internationally popular children's series Hi-5 which she co-created. Posie also composes music and writes novels. As Director of Drama at Nine, she was responsible for commissioning one of Australia's highest rating telemovies of all time, The Alice.

MA, FAICD. Honorary Professor, The University of Melbourne. Non-Executive Director, The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne. Non-Executive Director, Information City Australia, an incubator for commercialising innovation in Australia's information industries. Former Chief Executive, National Office for the Information Economy, 2001-2004. Executive Director, Multimedia Victoria, 1995-1997. Member, Australian Broadcasting Authority, 1997-2001. Chair, Australia Council New Media Arts Board, 1997-2001.

Dr Chris Sarra

Dr Sarra is the Executive Director of the Indigenous Education Leadership Institute, which is based in Caboolture, and designed to pursue stronger, smarter, student outcomes for Indigenous children throughout Australia. He became well-known as the first ever Aboriginal principal of Cherbourg State School in south-east Queensland. In his time as Principal he facilitated many positive changes that saw increasing enthusiasm for student learning. Dr Sarra is the 2004 Suncorp Queenslander of the Year; 2004 QUT Chancellor’s Outstanding Alumnus and Faculty of Education Outstanding Alumni Award Winner; and Indigenous 2006 Scholar of the Year.

Sandra Levy

An award winning film and television producer, Sandra Levy's numerous credits in television as producer include Police Rescue, Palace of Dreams, Secret Men’s Business, True Believers and A Difficult Woman. As executive producer she has been responsible for hundreds of hours of drama including Come In Spinner, Bodysurfer, GP, Edens Lost, Secret Weapon and A Dangerous Life. Sandra has produced a number of feature films, including The Well, which was selected for competition at the Cannes Film Festival. She has been a board member of the Australian Film Finance Corporation and the Australian Film Commision and is currently a board member of the Sydney Theatre Company and the NSW Cultural Management Committee.

Peter Herbert
Staff Member

Peter Herbert is a writer and producer with an extensive range of credits in television, stage and film. He has worked in senior management and creative positions for major Australian, American and British companies including Artist Services, Beyond International and Granada and has been responsible for many number-one rating and award winning dramas and comedies on Australian television such as Cop Shop, The Flying Doctors, The Comedy Company, Acropolis Now, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Charity Gala, The TV Week Logies and The World Comedy Tour. Peter is currently Head of Producing at AFTRS.

Muffy Potter
Student Member

Muffy Potter

Muffy Potter has had a diverse career in the arts that includes studying a three-year diploma of performance, writing, film distribution and was company director of the independent theatre company Urban Tales. She has also worked extensively in marketing in a range of corporate organisations and is currently a Television Producing student at AFTRS.
